KAF opened in 1999 with funds from the Keighley Social Regeneration Budget. Since that time it has been supported by Keighley College and now Leeds City College to the extent that the gallery and studio space enrich the experience of the local community and college students. As a result, Keighley has a new type of municipal art gallery and community creative space. KAF is centrally located on North Street and incorporates not only the gallery but also Hand Made at KAF and an artists' studio available for hire.

Family Learning is Fun!

Keighley Arts Factory, in partnership with Keighley Furniture Project, has been awarded Big Lottery funding for three years to deliver workshops and courses to local families in film and photography.

The Project "Keighley Families Welcome" aims to bring local families together and improve family learning. Our partners, the Keighley Furniture Project, will be delivering workshops in cooking together and decorating.

So we have started holding fun workshops for families in photography, including "Spooky Stories" -horror in a box! Families have made small stage sets in boxes and have been lighting them to create eery scenes which they have then photographed. Here are just two of the spooky stories, made by families from Parkwood.

This project is for 3 years and is open to all families in the Keighley district. Workshops are free and anyone can come provided they have a child or an adult with them (parents, carers, grandparents, siblings).

Human Landscape by Francine Cross

"I was born in Lille, northern France and now live near York. I obtained a BA in Visual Studies, as a mature student, in the year 2000. I have taken part in both solo and group exhibitions over the past 12 years as well as showing work in some hotels.
"The focus of my work is the versatility of the human form. The marks of brushes, knives and charcoal aim to represent the dichotomy of the body, its vulnerability and its strength.
To convey expressions of the figure my explorations seek to capture the abstract nature of individual form. Frequent travels in Asia, where my son lives, and in Europe are strongly influencing my present work, opening my eyes to vibrant colours. The use of mixed media represents the skin diversity.
"The shapes and textures of landscape can sometimes be perceived within the exploration of the human form".

Human Sculpture by Deborah Newbould

"My subject matter focuses upon the exploration of growth, decay and the life cycle. I make figurative ceramic sculptural forms that have texture running through them, created by organic materials. The organic materials represent the growth, a life growing into the future then decaying from the firings and parts being broken away. The traces represent our memories of human connections.
"I am concerned with the dialogue between the textures of the outer skin and the inner structure. My ceramic figures are hand built to a complete mass before parts are broken away; leaving a sense of weight that was once there. The high temperature firing process provides an exciting element of chance and uncertainty as the sculptures have a possibility of movement and closure. They hold a strong presence that forces the viewer to investigate the broken forms that appear to have textures of natural landscape that can represent the aging process or rotting flesh after death.
"I am inviting my viewer to be aware of memories and emotions that sense the realisation of the human condition. "

Human Perception will be shown in Keighley Arts Factory Gallery until Wednesday 4 November 2009.
